Initiative

Partnership with the NTUCF to take care of the Brethren

Initiative Leader

Charles Loh, NTICFer, Past Vice President, Class of 1986

Charles currently works for the Business Consulting Group, IBM as a Managing Consultant with responsibilities for the Government and Defence sectors. He specializes in business process re-engineering and IT project management. He led in the effort to win several mega millions engagements, and he was also the project director/manager of several other complex projects. Charles was part of the PwC Consulting team which joined IBM after the global acquisition and prior to that, he worked for Ernst & Young Consulting.

Charles’ career spans over 18 years. Before beginning his consulting career, he was the Corporate Planning Manager / CIO of a locally listed marine and shipping company, where he developed and implemented the IT masterplan as part of the company’s transformation from a family run into a professionally managed company and with the vision to go regional. He also led several initiatives to invest in joint ventures in the China and South East Asia (including the setting up of a shipyard in Batam, coal mine in Kalimantan and oil refinery in Longkou, China).

Charles’ first job after graduation was with the Ministry of Defence where on a SAF Scholarship, he served in several appointments including Senior Project Manager for Command and Control Information Systems which deploys the latest state of the art technology, and the Army Head Budget Control, managing an annual budget of S$1bil. He is still an active NSman with the rank of LTC, holding a key appointment in a Division HQ, sits on the NS Working Committee as a Committee Member and serves as a National Education Lecturer (giving talks to Junior Colleges and Polytechnics).

With such diverse working experience, Charles has developed strengths in achieving results, developing win-win relationships with customers and partners, and building high-performance teams. He has also developed deep insights into the operation and administration of governments and the civil service.

Charles graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering (Honours) and has an MBA from the University of Hull. He is also a part time lecturer with the School of Computing, National University of Singapore. He is happily married with two sons and a daughter. He jogs regularly and occasionally indulges in a game of golf, holding a decent handicap of 21.

Objective

To extend a hand of fellowship to the current CFers in order that they build up a trust and relationship with the Alumni that will allow them to be inspired to boldly step into the working world

Description

It is our belief that there are significant role models in the Alumni that will inspire the current CFers to trust that God is faithful and will take care of our needs. Our vision is to develop a channel where the CFers will continue their fervor when they graduate and continue to be active in ministry as well as be successful in their careers. Our goal is to ensure that each graduate from the CF will be planted in the local Church and contribute to the community.

Background

Today many of the graduates of the CF get caught up with career, family and other distractions in life once they leave campus. The earlier batches of graduates have “been there, done that” and would have the marketplace maturity to share and inspire these graduates to continue to be fervent for Christ. The key is to be grounded in a local Church.

We believe this is a sustainable model that will have a significant impact to the community. It is an investment that will build upon the strength of the Alumni where we can really make a difference.

Pathforward

Those who are interested to participate in this initiative are to send a note to Charles Loh at lohccmse@singnet.com.sg . A meeting will then be called where Charles will share more details of this initiative, what are the possibilities, how you can be involved and what are the next steps.

Next Steps

We need a "2 steps" approach :

First, at the undergraduate phase (when they are still with the CF), we need to work with the CF to ensure that all members are attending a church when studying, and for the final year students, to have some form of programme to encourage them to re-engage back to church (if they are not already done so).

Second, when they graduate and start working - the Alumni may want to consider some form of regular meetings. This is likely to be especially helpful for those who are still floundering around without a church. It can be at a year-level - we can work with each graduating batch to appoint a small team to organise the meetings. At the end of the day, I think the key objective is to make sure none is lost to the world when they leave the comfort zone of university and the CF.

But if this kicks off, the Alumni can also capitalise on this and think of how to further bond them to the Alumni (with those initiatives we have in mind). We can consider interest groups to keep these people together (this can be work related or family or sports).
